Initiatives of Algarve Biomedical Center (ABC) to fight COVID-19

ABC tracks elderly homes in the Algarve

The Algarve Biomedical Center (ABC) has been screening, since April 1, all users and employees of the elderly homes in the Algarve. In four days, around 400 people have already been tested in five homes of the Region.

The teams are composed by doctors of different specialties and nurses, and the harvests are analyzed in the laboratories of the Center for Research in Biomedicine (CBMR), of the University of Algarve, a member of ABC.

Swabs made in Algarve

The Algarve started to produce swabs using the manual method. In three days, around a thousand have already been produced to meet the needs of the Region.

The initiative results from a partnership between the Algarve Biomedical Center (ABC) and the start-up MARK6 – PROTOTYPING.

COVID-19 test center in the Algarve has already tested 1200 people

The COVID-19 testing center in the Algarve has already carried out 1200 tests on the population of the Region. Since April 1, people considered suspected of being infected with the new coronavirus, whom health authorities have recommended testing, but who do not require hospital care, have been referred to this drive-thru located at Estádio Algarve. When arriving at the place in their own vehicle, from where they never leave, people are guided by the authorities present, who show them the route to go, having two stops: next to a first tent, in which they identify themselves; in a second tent, where they test through the car window.

The samples collections and analyzes are carried out by the Algarve Biomedical Center (ABC).

The objective of the creation of this test center was to reduce the risk of infection, since the less serious suspected cases started to be tested quickly and safely, without being exposed to the hospital environment or other health units and, still, without contact with people or fomite during waiting and harvesting.

ABC trains students to assist on the SNS 24 Line

The Algarve Biomedical Center (ABC) established a partnership with the Ministry of Health to strengthen the response capacity of the SNS24 Line. There are already 160 medical students from the University of Algarve trained and who are part of the Faro call center.

An experience that is being replicated in Braga, where it also opened a call center to reinforce the SNS24 Line. Here, 130 medical students from the University of Minho are allocated, to whom ABC provided training, maintaining a team in person monitoring.

Algarve creates support line for the population on COVID-19

The population of the Algarve has a free telephone line, INFO COVID-19 Algarve, for clarification on COVID-19. The line works every day between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm through the number 800 222 019.

The initiative is from the Algarve Biomedical Center (ABC) and aims to answer questions, as well as inform citizens about care and procedures to ensure the safety and compliance with the National Emergency State.

International support to Mozambique

The Covid-19 MZ page by Academia Bacalhau Maputo, Facebook: @ Covid19MZAcademiaBacalhauMaputo and Instagram: @ covid19mz, was created to provide information and support to the Portuguese community residing in Mozambique and the Mozambican population in this battle against COVID-19.

All people can send questions directly to the page or via e-mail to the address: covid19mz@sapo.pt. The answer to the questions and the publication of technical content on health is made only after review by a health professional from the Algarve Biomedical Center (ABC).
